Dear Parents and Carers,
In week 2 this term our year 6-7 students went to Canberra. Throughout the week I kept in touch with the staff team and was able to send regular updates to the parents. A consistent message that came through was what a wonderful time they were having and how well the students were managing their opportunity for independence. Even more importantly the staff all reported how proud they were of the students and their engagement in the learning and fun of the Canberra experience. This is a great news story worth sharing.
On Monday this week we had the staff of St Catherine’s Stirling visit our school to learn more about restorative practices and circle time. Our session was launched with circle time led by Ella, Emma and Grace, this was a lot of fun. Matt, Rob, Kathy and Cynthia shared their learning and experiences from a staff perspective. Matt and Rob were very well supported by students from their classes; Cinzia, Anthony, Nicholas and Allie from 5-6 and Jamie and Charlie from 3-4. We were very proud of the students who sat in a circle with 18 adults, shared some information they had prepared and then responded to open questions. The staff at St Catherine’s were certainly impressed.
The strongest theme throughout the morning was the importance of building strong relationships and developing the skills to repair those relationships when things go wrong. Students talked about having the opportunity to share their side of the story and also hear the other person’s perspective. In several classes in the school students are now leading circle time so as well as building strong relationships, they are developing their leadership skills.
On Monday 28th November we have our final Parents and Friends meeting for the year. Please look out for an invitation and consider coming along to learn more about the work of the committee. Even if you are unsure about committing to regular meetings it is worth coming to this one. We will be exploring the role of the P and F and beginning our planning for 2017. We would love to see new faces and hear ideas from the community.
Please remember to be vigilant in the car park and pick up and drop off zone. There continues to be concern about adults following the rules and sticking to the speed limit. With 270 children moving on to and off the site there is a high risk of accident if people do not follow procedure and drive slowly.
Enjoy the next two weeks,
Clare

NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year.
As students progress through their school years, it is important to check how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and numeracy.
NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national standards.
NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. It does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with additional information about students’ educational progress.
NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are achieving important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.
Online NAPLAN tests provide more precise results and are engaging for students. The tests are tailored (or adaptive), which means that each test presents questions that may be more or less difficult depending on a student’s responses. This helps students remain engaged with the assessment.
Tailored testing allows a wider range of student abilities to be assessed and measures student achievement more precisely. A student’s overall NAPLAN result is based on both the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions challenging; they may be taking a more complex test pathway.
All Year 3 students will continue to complete the writing assessment on paper.
